The Skarżyńskis
We became professional set designers at the Stary Theatre, meaning that we learned to take on any subject and to fight for our personal visions right here.
The couple created set designs for numerous theatre, opera and film productions in Poland and abroad. Their theatre work included collaborations with directors Jerzy Grotowski, Konrad Swinarski, Jerzy Jarocki and Andrzej Wajda. They were also responsible for set designs for Wojciech Has’s films The Saragossa Manuscript (1964), The Doll (1968) and The Hour-Glass Sanatorium (1973). They developed their own, easily-recognizable style of surrealist stage design which “put the real world on trial.”
